Actually it did not, because "--test-plugin-path=/foo" was not being passed to the test. If that option is not specified, it looks first in the path where libvtkCommon is located. The option is not used in CMBv5 and still things work for v5. However, passing a good value gets v6 testing properly, so problem solved!
